In Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll, at the Mad Tea Party
the following conversation took place:

“Have some wine “ said the March Hare in an encouraging tone.

Alice looked all round the table but there was nothing on it but tea.

“I don’t see any wine.” she remarked

“There isn’t any. “ said the March Hare.

“It wasn’t very civil of you to offer it.” said Alice angrily


Pleasant soundbites, wishful thinking and ‘spin’ have become, it seems,
the stock in trade for politicians with little positive to say.

The latest expression being used is ‘sexed up’ – In politco-speak this
involves brightening up an empty and dull document or statement with
dubious ‘facts’.
